You guys! Yesterday’s drive was a HUGE success! The amount of donations we received was surreal, how quickly this came together and how many of you showed up to help brought tears to my eyes more than once. Even just while were outside ‘The Drink’ sorting the donations, people would walk by and go home and come back with carts full of donations. Truly amazing! We left there around 11am with 7 cars (two pick up trucks) and 35 people who came down with us to climb the dark stairs and get water/food/supplies to the elderly that were unable to get down.
After we delivered all the water we had and whatever else we had that was needed to the people upstairs, what wasn’t needed in Brighton Beach was dispersed… Large Warm Clothing was taken to the Park Slope armory, Baby clothing and diapers were taken to Gerritsen Beach, and the rest of our sandwiches were taken to Neptune Avenue and handed out on the street. There wasn’t one item that was needed somewhere. Thanks to everyone who tweeted at me with specific locations!
Now we are doing it again! But even bigger this time! Four drop off locations (Manhattan. Brooklyn: Prospect Heights, Gowanus, and Williamsburg), in addition to that we are attempting to arrange two vans to carry people willing to clean houses to area that are in need. We have one van, but are in need of one more! We’ve had someone just now donate a moving truck to collect all the donations and get them to the locations! Absolutely amazing what is happening!
